Acision IP-SM Gateway
Mobile network operators are in the midst of multiple radical changes that will significantly alter business and operations. The enormous increase in smartphone penetration has altered when and where consumers connect, thus encouraging the adoption of a growing range of IP based services. Next to this shifting landscape, the very core network technologies are in the process of transitioning to all IP, 4G networks based on long term evolution (LTE) and IP multimedia subsystem (IMS). As a result, operators are seeking solutions that will sustain their immediate revenues and function as the foundation of rich IP based messaging services.
The potential for these services is significant. A recent report from Informa predicts that the number of mobile instant messaging (chat) users will grow from around 1 billion in 2011 to almost 4 billion in 2016, with consumer spend growing from over $5 billion in 2011 to over $15 billion in 2016.
From a revenue perspective however, SMS will remain the most significant messaging service for mobile operators in the foreseeable future. Person to Person SMS represents a $100+ billion operator revenue stream and is forecast to grow for years to come. Also the number of SMS users will grow from around 7 billion in 2011 to over 10 billion in 2016, generating over $120 billion in operator revenues. SMS traffic shows an ever bigger growth, from 5.9 trillion messages in 2011 to 9.4 trillion in 2016.
Therefore it is imperative that mobile operators extend the SMS service to IP devices and networks, and in parallel develop the market for rich, IP based messaging services. The IP-SM Gateway provides a broadly supported implementation of SMS over IP for LTE, WiFI and 3G IP-only devices, defined as part of the Voice Over LTE (VoLTE) standards.
The Acision IP-SM Gateway provides network operators with a smooth evolution step towards rich, IP based messaging services and assures SMS service continuity for IP-only networks and devices. The IP-SM Gateway provides operators who are migrating to LTE with the ability to sustain existing Person to Person SMS revenues as a foundation for new IP messaging revenue streams, all supported from a single operational environment. Based on its unparalleled experience in messaging, Acision is uniquely equipped to provide the operator with a risk free evolutionary path to this new message ecosystem.
The Acision IP-SM Gateway can be delivered with two deployment options. Firstly, deploying it as an on-board module of Acision SMSC allows the operator to leverage existing administration, billing and reporting processes and provides additional efficiencies by filtering messages for SIP enabled users before passing on to the SMSC’s SIP interface. Secondly, the Acision IP-SM Gateway can also be deployed as a stand-alone element for integration with other vendors’ SMSCs based on standard SIGTRAN interfaces.
